Business Unit

A Business Unit represents a legal entity, but might be used within one company for operational reasons. In a 3PL environment, each Business Unit can maintain its own data setup (like dimension sets), ensuring that accounting and reporting remain organized and easily audited. On the business unit page, a company logo and address can be specified, which can be used in document reports. The Business unit is typically selected by the user when creating shipments.

Subsidiary

A Subsidiary is a separate legal entity that is owned or controlled by a parent company. When applying it, the subsidiary code often defines which subsidiary the transactions, or dimensions apply to. This separation allows for clear financial statements and related operational processes, ensuring that each subsidiary’s records remain distinct but consolidated where needed for reporting. On the subsidiary page, a company logo and address can be specified, which can be used in document reports.

Dimensions

Dimensions are values that categorize entries so you can track and analyze them on documents, such as shipments or transportation bookings. Dimensions can, for example, indicate the project or department an entry came from.

You can assign a default dimension for a specific Business Unit, Subsidiary or service.

The dimension from the Business unit is copied from the header. The dimension from the Subsidiary is copied to the cost/revenue line when you enter the Subsidiary code on the line. The dimensions set up on the Service is copied to the cost/revenue line when you enter the service number on a line.

You can delete or change the code on the line if appropriate.

To set up deafult dimensions for Business units, Subsidiary and services (fms).

  1. Choose the Lightbulb that opens the Tell Me feature. icon, enter Service (FMS), then choose the related link.
  2. Multi-select the services and choose the Dimensions-Multiple action.
  3. On the Default Dimensions-Multiple page, select the relevant dimension code.
  4. Fill in a line for each new default dimension you want to set up. Hover over a field to read a short description.

Dimensions rules

Dimension rules can be setup when the criteria for assignment of the dimension is more copmplex. The Dimension rules setup allows a user to setup specific rules for the assignment of a dimension, such as Header table filters and filters based on Areas. When you work in an environment with Subsidiary codes, Dimension rules also allow you to assign a subsidiary code to a cost/revenue line.

Note

Default dimensions are assigned automatically when creating the Cost/Revenue line. Consider to use default dimensions when possible and only handle the exceptions with Dimension rules. Dimension rules are also applied automatically by implementing a status function that can be configured in the status flow of the Cost/Revenue line.
