Ports

Introduction

Ports represent specific locations, such as seaports or airports, that are crucial points in your transportation chains. Defining ports is necessary for accurate shipment routing, scheduling, and potentially for geographical rating.

Setting Up Ports

  1. Choose the Lightbulb that opens the Tell Me feature icon, enter Ports, and then choose the related link.
  2. On the Ports page, choose the New action to add a new port.
  3. Fill in the following fields:
    • Code: Enter a unique code for the port (e.g., using standard codes like UN/LOCODE - 'NLRTM' for Rotterdam, 'DEHAM' for Hamburg, 'USNYC' for New York City, 'AMS' for Amsterdam Schiphol).
    • Name: Provide the full name of the port (e.g., 'Port of Rotterdam', 'Hamburg Airport').
    • City: Enter the city where the port is located.
    • Country/Region Code: Select the country or region code.
    • Area Code: Optionally, link the port to a predefined Area for grouping or rating purposes.

Using Ports

Ports are primarily used in:

  • Shipment Documents: Specifying the Port of Loading (POL), Port of Discharge (POD), and potentially transshipment ports.
  • Voyage/Schedule Management: Defining the sequence of port calls for a vessel or flight.
  • Rate Management: Ports can be a key factor in determining freight rates, often used in conjunction with Areas or Regions.
