Notification Recipients in the Business Central Admin Center

Microsoft allows tenant administrators to sign up for automated email notifications about environment lifecycle events through the Notification Recipients list in the Business Central admin center. Because Boltrics manages your updates on your behalf, these notifications can overlap with or contradict the planning shown in your Boltrics environment. This article explains what these notifications are, what Boltrics recommends, and what to do with the emails you may receive.

Tip

For background on how Boltrics manages updates, see Updates Within Boltrics: How Does It Work?. For details on rescheduling your update, see Get ready to receive a new Business Central update.

What are Notification Recipients?

Notification Recipients is a list of email addresses in the Business Central admin center. Everyone on this list receives automated emails directly from Microsoft about administrative events that occur on your tenant.

Examples of notifications Microsoft sends to recipients on this list include:

  • Update Available – a new major or minor version is available for your environment.
  • Update Scheduled / Postponed / Resumed – the planned update date for your environment has changed.
  • Update Succeeded or Failed – the outcome of a completed update run.
  • Extension Compatibility Issues – an installed app or extension is not compatible with the upcoming version. These emails typically have a subject like "Modify your extension so it's compatible with version XX.X.XXXXX.X".
  • Blocked Updates – the update has been paused because an extension blocks it. Microsoft resends these notifications periodically until the issue is resolved.

Boltrics recommendation: do not subscribe

We recommend that you do not add yourself to the Notification Recipients list. Boltrics manages the entire update lifecycle on your behalf, for both Microsoft updates and Boltrics updates. To do this, we maintain our own update environment inside Business Central (the Boltrics Customers list), which is the single source of truth for your planning. This environment shows:

  • The scheduled Microsoft major and minor updates.
  • The scheduled Boltrics updates.
  • The release notes and version information for each upcoming update.
  • The option to reschedule your update within the allowed 2–8 week window.

Because Boltrics plans and communicates both the Microsoft and the Boltrics side of your update, the Microsoft notification emails are redundant at best and confusing at worst. Customers who subscribe can receive emails that conflict with the schedule Boltrics has planned for them.

Note

Boltrics may change the Microsoft update date in the admin center to align it with your Boltrics planning. As a result, the update date shown in your Boltrics environment is leading and reflects the planning that will actually be executed.

How to remove yourself from Notification Recipients

  2. In the left-hand menu, select "Notification Recipients".
  3. Select the row with the email address you want to remove.
  4. Click "Remove recipient" at the top of the page.
  5. Confirm the removal.

Repeat the steps for every recipient you want to remove.

How to add yourself to Notification Recipients

If you still want to receive Microsoft notifications directly, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to the Business Central admin center at https://businesscentral.dynamics.com/<yourtenantID>/admin, replacing <yourtenantID> with your own Microsoft Entra tenant ID.
  2. In the left-hand menu, select "Notification Recipients".
  3. Click "Add recipient" at the top of the page.
  4. Enter the "Name" and "Email Address" of the recipient.
  5. Click Save.

You can add up to 100 recipients. For larger groups, use a distribution list.

If you choose to stay subscribed

If you prefer to remain a Notification Recipient, please keep the following in mind: Modify your extension" emails can be ignored. You may receive emails with the subject "Modify your extension so it's compatible with version XX.X.XXXXX.X". These emails can refer to Boltrics-published extensions. Boltrics manages these extensions and ensures they are compatible and up to date before your production update takes place. We monitor this for all customers as part of every update cycle, so no action is required on your part and you can safely ignore these emails.

The Microsoft update date in admin center may change

You may notice that the update date shown in the Microsoft admin center differs from the date shown in "Boltrics Customers", or that Boltrics changes the Microsoft update date in the admin center. This is expected behaviour:

  • The Boltrics customer list is the leading source for your update planning.
  • Boltrics aligns the Microsoft update date in the admin center with the schedule in "Boltrics Customers" to keep both systems consistent.
  • If you reschedule your update through "Boltrics Customers", the corresponding date in the Microsoft admin center will also be updated by Boltrics.

Do not reschedule Microsoft updates directly in the admin center. Always use "Boltrics Customers" – see How can I change my update date? for instructions.
