Design Details - Trip Calculation

General

This page describes the principles of the trip calculation. When you calculate a trip, TMS determines the activities of the trip, the route, the driving distances and times, and the planned arrival and ending times.

  • A planner license is required for using the PTV API. Contact your local partner for more information.
  • The route-calculation is based on the characteristics per region. The basic settings are based on Western Europe. For other regions modification may be required. Contact your local partner for more information.
  • The sequence of stops on a trip is based on the sequence a users selected the unplanned sections/markers. For more information see: Design principles Sequence Determination

PTV Functionality

To calculate the route, driving distances and -duration on a Trip 3PL Dynamics uses an API from PTV. The PTV-route-optimizer is enabling 3PL to calculate and show routing based on the type of Resource and both historical and actual traffic information. In addition to the route information Toll-costs and Emission Calculation will be added to the Trip. 3PL Dynamics also uses PTV's maps and Geocoding functions.

The type of Resource planned on aTrip influences the route, driving distances and -duration. When Calculating a trip the PTV Vehicle Profiles will be retrieved from the Truck planned on the Trip. If the Truck does not contain a PTV Vehicle Profile the PTV Vehicle Profiles set on the Vehicle Resource Group will be applied. If the Resource Group does not contain a PTV Vehicle Profile the PTV Vehicle Profile set on the PTV Setup will be applied. If no Truck has been planned on the Trip or no PTV Vehicle Profile has been set on the PTV Setup the default profile: EUR_TRUCK_40T will be applied.

Trip Start Determination

When creating new Trips new features have been added that allows the start time to be determinated in three different ways:

  • Fixed start time. Every new Trip will begin at a preset time by entering a value on the page: Transport Settings under the tab: Planning in the field: Default Trip Starting Time.

  • First Load Activity is Start Time. When on the page: Transport Settings under the tab: Planning the field: First Load Activity is Start Time is enabled starting time of the Trip will be determined based on the field: loading Time From of the first Section planned on the Trip.

  • Trip Calculation Setup. On the page Trip Calculation Setup, turn on Enabled and set the Calculation Resource and optionally the Trip Table Filter and Trip Inclusion Dateformula. TMS then calculates consecutive trips of that resource: the trip starts where and when the previous trip of the resource ends.

Driving and Resting Time Law

Trip calculation can automatically insert rest stops into a trip once a driving or work-time limit is reached, to help keep trips compliant with driving and rest time regulations. See Driving and Resting Time Law.
