Trip
General
A trip is a collection of sections that are planned and executed with a combination of resources, such as a truck, a trailer, and a driver. A trip is also the document that you use to calculate costs and, when needed, to send the work to a board computer. For more information on the tripcalculation see: Design Principles Trip Calculation
Sections are added to a matching trip, or a new trip is created, by the Status Template function: Create / Update Trip For Sections.
To create empty trips without orders or sections, for example on a schedule with the job queue, use the function set function CREATE EMPTY TRIP.
Tab-sheets
The trip contains a number of tab-sheets. Depending on the personalization-settings, not all tabs will will be shown automatically to each user/role.

| Resource/Outsourcing | The resources used to perform the trip. Depending on the execution, this can be a truck, trailer and driver(s). If a trip is not performed in-house but by a third party then the supplier can be registered. |
| Sections | The sections planned on a trip. |
| Planned Sections | The sections planned on the trip. Each line contains a section. Various section functions are available on each line. |
| Section sequence | The sectons planned on the trip. Each line contain a section. With buttons the sequence can be changed. |
| Activities | All activities that apply to the trip. Possibility to configure additional activities for a trip. I.E. Border waypoints, Ferry Lines, Bridges, Weight platforms or Cleaning Stations. |
| Stops | All activities planned on one address within a contiguous time window. |
| Costs | The costs applicable to the trip. Costs can be added manually but it is also possible to determine them automatically based on TMS contacts. By clicking on the Action: Compare Vendor a list of Vendors applicable on the trip will be presented. |
| Revenue | If revenue is determined based on the trip, it will be visible here. |
Fact-boxes
In addition to the tab sheets above, a number of fact boxes can be displayed in which additional information is visible. Depending on the personalization-settings not all Fact-boxes will be shown automatically to each user/role.

Determine the from and to address of a trip
A trip has a From Address (where the trip starts) and a To Address (where the trip ends). TMS determines both addresses automatically when you calculate the trip, so the trip starts where the previous work of the resource ended.
If you change an address manually, TMS asks whether to keep your change. If you keep it, TMS no longer determines that address. TMS also doesn't determine the address when the trip has a manual or an already calculated start (or end) activity.
From address
By default, TMS determines the From Address in the following order and uses the first address it finds:
- Previous trip: The To Address of the linked trip. This is a specific method and no longer advised.
- Successive trip calculation: The To Address of the previous trip of the calculation resource, when Trip Calculation Setup is enabled. See Successive trip calculation.
- Default site of the driver: When a Default Site is set on the driver.
- Default site of the truck: When a Default Site is set on the truck.
- First section: The loading address of the first section on the trip, by load sequence.
When a default site is found on the driver or truck and it differs from the current address, TMS asks whether to use it. The default answers in Transport Setup (Default From Address Confirm Answer) can answer this question automatically.
You can change this order for a specific trip on the Trip Planning Setup, by selecting one method (Previous Trip, Driver Default Site, Truck Default Site, or First Section) in the field From Address Determination. If that method doesn't result in an address, TMS falls back on the default order.
To address
TMS determines the To Address in the following order:
- Default site of the driver, when set on the driver.
- Default site of the truck, when set on the truck.
- Last section: The unloading address of the last section on the trip, by unload sequence.
Trip calculation
3PL Dynamics provides two methods of calculating trips:
- Calculating a single trip.
- Calculating based on the previous trip, including updating successive trips.
Calculate a single trip
TMS calculates the selected trip. Based on the from date and time, the from address, the resource, and the planned sections, TMS calculates the activities. This results in planned arrival and ending dates and times, and distances on the activities.
Successive trip calculation
This functionality is available when Trip Calculation Setup is enabled and a calculation resource is set. Use it when the start of a trip depends on the end of the previous trip of the same truck or driver.
When a successive trip of the calculation resource has a start date and time before the end date and time of the previous trip, TMS recalculates the successive trip automatically:
- The start date and time of the successive trip are set to the end date and time of the previous trip.
- The From Address of the successive trip is set to the To Address of the previous trip.
- All activities of the successive trip are recalculated, based on the new start date, start time, and From Address.
To use successive trip calculation, add the function Calculate activities for this and following trips to the status template of the trip. In the default status template, this function runs when the trip is released. For more information, see Status templates for transportation.
Trip package administration
Users can register the quantity of packages exchanged on a trip by clicking on the action: Trip Package Administration on the list-page: Trips. For more information on setting up the Package Exchange see: Package.
